The SSP-100 was the world's first portable, autonomous sound spatialization audio processor. Capable of generating a wide range of spatialization effects in 1, 2 and 3-dimensions, it opened a whole new dimension of work with sound and music for musicians, composers, studio recording specialists, and sound effect specialists.

The SSP-100 performs the following functions:

  • Can be used with almost any arrangements of from 2 to 8 speakers in 1 to 3 dimensions.
  • Has 3 independent avenues for inputting spatialization patterns (an internal Sequencer, Joysticks or through the External Interface).
  • Creates, edits and records spatialization Programs.
  • Allows transportation of preprogrammed works to different performance sites, where they can be played back intact with the same spatialization results even on a different number and arrangement of speakers.
  • Interfaces with a wide range of external instruments including MIDI, synthesizers, tape recorders, foot pedals, digital delays, reverb units...
  • Has a comprehensive MIDI implementation. The MIDI interface can be used to either directly interact between MIDI Output of a synthesizer and the SSP-100, or to record and edit a spatialization program on a regular MIDI Sequencer track, along with other musical information.
  • Can control an external digital delay for Doppler Frequency Shift simulation.
  • Can be used with an external Reverb unit for enhanced distance simulation.
  • Can shift functions during live performances or recording sessions easily, and without interrupting current activity.

While Surround Sound has nowadays made spatial sound effects common in cinema and home systems, the SSP-100 was at the time of its introduction a ground-breaking instrument. Its unusual but very effective user iuterface made it a favorite with numerous sound designers around the world, some of whom still use their vintage SSP-100 to this day! Users have included NASA, Walt Disney World, Dolby Labs, Hollywood post-production studios and IMAX producers.

The SSP-100 was originally designed in 1984. It was manufactured by Spatial Sound Inc. (California) and is no longer available.
